The famous Canadian film maker Rob Spence, who lost his right eye in a childhood accident has already replaced his eye with Bionic eye. Bionic eye can be used by patients suffering from diseases like Retinitis Pigmentosa and Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Bionic eye consist of video camera, pocket PC and a Liquid Crystal Microdisplay (LCD). The video camera will record everything which comes under the vision and send them to pocket PC. These images are then displayed on LCD, this is similar to video goggles.
One more case of Bionic eye is at London. The doctors of Moorfield’s Eye Hospital has fitted bionic eye to a 73 years old giving him virtual sight.
Even in the age of miniaturization, getting a wireless video camera into a prosthetic eye isn't easy. The shape of the prosthetic is the biggest limitation: In Spence's case, it's 9-mm thick, 30-mm long and 28-mm high. The average area available inside an eye is 8 mm. Its very hard to fit terminator eye into the body as it contains sensor, visible lens and video camera which has many parts as well.
How they made this eye?
Traditional prosthetic eyes are single pieces made with polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), a flexible polymer that is also used in dentures. To fit a camera in, prosthetic eye is designed into two pieces that could snap shut.
A camera module will be connected to transmit inside the prosthetic eye that can broadcast the captured video footage. A transmitter will be fitted on the belt which will help to boost the signal. A receiver attached to a hard drive in a backpack could capture that information and then send it to another device that uploads everything to a web site in real time.
Now, something funny, the problem of this bionic eye is not only in fitting, but also in using it. Theaters will not allow you to enter as a fear of recording the movie. Expressing love will also be difficult as for that you need to look into eyes not in cameras. Last, you can scar the people.
